When I made this painting, I was taking a class in physics at the College of Creative Studies and had been learning about golden ratios in nature - which is what the nautilus is doing in this painting - and began to notice as I painted that the agave plant also grew in a golden ratio. There had been a tsunami off the coast of Japan, and I went out to paint on the bluffs overlooking the ocean, waiting all day for the tsunami to arrive… but it never did.
