I made this painting during a particularly gorgeous summer sunset in Santa Barbara. I wanted to capture the soft pastel glow of the sky and the whole sweep of the coastline heading south that you can see from this point. Just underneath this palm tree was what was called “the jailhouse,” but was actually a Prohibition-era entrance to an underground tunnel, according to my college painting teacher anyway. People would throw arty bonfire parties out here, and the art on the jailhouse walls was every-changing.
