Every winter the monarch butterflies on their great migration south to Mexico would come to Ellwood Preserve, a treasured coastal sanctuary in Santa Barbara along the coastal bluffs that I would run and walk in almost every day. The air here was always fragrant with the smell of eucalyptus trees and ocean spray, and the trees were always gently knocking against one another. This painting is looking north at the preserve from the coast to the south.
