All Is Not Lost – Surrealist Figurative Portrait – 30x40 Large Original Oil Painting
This model sat for us for hours. At the time of this painting, I was studying Jungian psychology and exploring its symbolism, and continually getting symbolic hits that wanted to join into the scene. The setting I put this model into is the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland near my childhood home, which overlooks the San Francisco bay. She had incredible, evocative tattoos. In her hands I put a skull, a motif that my grandpa told me was used in old paintings to indicate that the subject deeply understood death. All I can say about the hand touching her foot is that it felt right to me - the owner of the hand is beckoning her to continue moving. Between her feet is an abstraction of a cosmic wheel representing the twelve signs of the zodiac.
